Fillout vs Brieform: Two Very Different Bets

All posts

Both of these tools make forms. That is roughly where the similarity ends.

Fillout bet on the editor: a builder where you drag fields onto a canvas, nest condition groups, compute a quiz score, and pipe the result into Salesforce without writing a line. Brieform bet the opposite way, that for a certain kind of user the editor is the tax and not the product. There is no drag and drop builder, on purpose. You describe the form to Claude or ChatGPT and it exists. The useful question is not which has more features (Fillout does, comfortably). It is which bet fits how a form actually shows up in your week.

How you build

With Fillout you open the app, pick a template or start blank, and drag from a library of over 50 field types: address blocks, currency, choice matrix, ranking, rating scales, file upload, a payment page. One question per screen or several, your call. The editor is where you live, and it is a good one.

With Brieform you never open a builder. The main interface is an MCP server (https://brieform.app/api/mcp/mcp, Streamable HTTP, OAuth 2.1 or an API key) that you connect to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Le Chat, Perplexity or VS Code. Twelve tools cover the lifecycle: create, update, get and list forms, publish and unpublish, set the theme, read responses, duplicate, delete, pull analytics, fetch share assets. Behind them sit 13 field types, 61 templates, 8 theme presets plus custom hex, 5 styles and 5 fonts. Forms start as drafts with a preview URL, so nothing goes public until you say so.

In practice:

Create a form in Brieform called "Q3 Partner Onboarding". Fields: company name (short text, required), contact email (email, required, reject free providers like gmail.com), country (dropdown, required), monthly volume (number, minimum 0), integration type (single select: API, CSV upload, manual entry), and a short text field asking which tool they are replacing that only shows when integration type is API. Split it into two steps with a progress bar, company details first, then technical. Use the slate-professional preset. Show me the preview URL before publishing, and once I confirm, publish it and hand me the share assets.

That is the whole build. No tab switch, no field panel, no save button.

The honest part: 13 field types against 50 plus is not close. Need an address block, a ranking question or a file upload? Brieform cannot do it.

Editing, and reading what comes back

Editing in Fillout means reopening the form in the editor and republishing. In Brieform it means saying "make the country field optional and move it to step two" in the same chat where you built it.

Responses split the same way. Fillout gives you a table you can filter and sort, CSV and PDF export, and partial submissions so someone who abandons halfway can resume. Brieform gives you get_responses in the conversation, with a csv_url mode past about 50 responses so you are not dumping a spreadsheet into your context window. Analytics (views, conversion rate, daily breakdown, top referrers, per step funnel, over 7, 30 or 90 days) sit behind get_form_analytics on Starter and up. CSV export works on every plan, Free included.

Brieform's dashboard is deliberately thin: billing, an audit log of the seven write tools, OAuth revocation per client. Two real gaps: no respondent draft saving, and no editing a response after submission. Fillout's partial submissions cover the first.

Logic depth, honestly

Fillout wins here and it is not close.

  • Condition groups. Fillout nests conditions. Brieform allows exactly one condition per field, with 8 operators, and no AND/OR grouping. One field, one rule.
  • Calculations and variables. Fillout computes order totals and quiz scores. Brieform has no calculated fields and no scoring at all.
  • Page and skip logic. Fillout branches between pages and skips sections. Brieform's multi-step forms run in order, with a progress bar and a per step drop off funnel, but no conditional jumps.
  • Hidden fields and URL prefill. Fillout passes data in through URL parameters. Brieform has no query string prefill.
  • One question per screen. Fillout offers it. Brieform does not.

If your form is a quote calculator, a scored quiz, or an eligibility funnel that branches five ways, use Fillout. Brieform's logic is built for "show the follow up when they pick Other", and that is where it ends.

Integrations, and what "no native integrations" really means

Fillout ships more than 50 native and partner integrations (Airtable, HubSpot, Notion, Stripe, Google Sheets, Salesforce, Slack, Calendly, Amazon S3 and a long tail beyond), plus outgoing webhooks, a REST API, Zapier and Make.

Brieform has zero. No native Notion, no Slack, no Sheets, no outgoing webhooks, no Zapier app. The bridge is your AI client: connect Brieform and the destination to the same assistant, then ask it to move the data.

Pull every response to my Q3 Partner Onboarding form from the last 7 days, drop the ones under 100 monthly volume, and create a page in my Notion partner database for each of the rest, company name as the title, contact email and country as properties. Then post one line in #partnerships on Slack with the count and the three largest.

The tradeoff runs both ways:

  • Fillout's connectors are unattended. A submission at 3am lands in HubSpot at 3am.
  • Brieform's routing is attended. Something has to ask. Fine for a batch you review each morning, wrong for an instant handoff.
  • But it is not tier gated. Routing works on Free, because the capability lives in your AI client, not a pricing table.
  • And it changes without a rebuild. A new destination is a new sentence, not a new connector.

Fillout publishes a REST API and OAuth apps, but as far as we can find, no first party MCP server, only third party wrappers. For Brieform, the MCP server is the product.

Price shape

Fillout runs a free forever tier, then Starter, Pro and Business, with Enterprise above. The meter is responses per month. Forms and seats are unlimited on every tier, and annual billing takes 20% off. We are not quoting their figures because they move.

Brieform's numbers are fixed. Free is $0: one published form, 50 responses a month, 11 of the 12 tools (no analytics), Brieform branding. Starter is $29/mo, or $23/mo annually: 20 published forms, 2,000 responses a month, all 12 tools, analytics, branding removable. Pro is $69/mo, or $55/mo annually: unlimited, plus priority support. Drafts are unlimited everywhere, since only published forms count against the quota.

The shapes differ in a way that matters. Fillout meters responses and gives you unlimited forms and seats. Brieform meters responses and published forms, and has no seats, because it has no teams.

Pick Fillout if any of this is true

  • You need branching past one condition per field. Nested logic, page jumps, skip logic.
  • You need to calculate or score. Order totals, quotes, quiz results.
  • You need file uploads or card payments. Brieform has neither.
  • You need an unattended handoff. Submission fires, CRM record appears, nobody in the loop.
  • You have a team. Brieform has no teams, roles or SSO. Fillout gives unlimited seats on every tier.
  • You need a custom domain, password protection or a scheduled close. None exist in Brieform.

Pick Brieform when the form is a small step inside a bigger AI workflow, when the form itself is simple (contact, intake, signup, feedback, waitlist), and when the dashboard is the thing you are trying to avoid. EU hosting helps: data in Frankfurt, encrypted at rest, a native GDPR consent field, 2FA, and no raw IP stored on responses. Spam protection is a honeypot, not a captcha, so it is weaker than Fillout's reCAPTCHA under a determined attack.

FAQ

Is Brieform a drop in replacement for Fillout?

No. Fillout is ahead on logic, field types, integrations, uploads and payments. Brieform replaces it only for simple forms where you would rather not open a builder at all.

Can I use Brieform without Claude or ChatGPT?

You need an MCP capable client, since that is the interface. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Le Chat, Perplexity and VS Code all work. The dashboard handles billing and the audit log, not building.

How does Brieform send responses to Notion or Slack with no integration?

Your AI client does it. Connect Brieform and the destination to the same assistant, then ask it to move the data. No Zapier, and it works on Free.

What does Brieform cost compared to Fillout?

Brieform is $0 for one published form and 50 responses a month, $29/mo for Starter (20 published forms, 2,000 responses, analytics) and $69/mo for Pro (unlimited). Annual billing takes 20% off. Fillout has a free tier and paid tiers metered by monthly responses; check their page for current figures.

Can I migrate a Fillout form to Brieform?

There is no importer. Paste your field list into your AI client and ask it to rebuild the form. Structure and theming carry over; calculations, scoring and multi condition logic do not.
